Nassima Al-Sadah is a columnist whose writing questioned largely the male guardianship system and advocated for greater rights for women across Saudi Arabia, including the right to drive. In late August 2018, Al-Sadah was arrested as part of a larger crackdown on women’s rights defenders in the Kingdom. On March 23, 2021, Al-Sadah was sentenced on appeal to five years in prison, two of which were suspended, with a seven-year travel ban to follow. Authorities released Al-Sadah on June 27, 2021 following the expiry of her sentence, but she remains under the travel ban.
