Dabholkar, a rationalist writer and activist, was shot and killed while on a walk in August 2013. Sharad Kalaskar was arrested for the murder, and confessed to the crime in 2019. The murder was linked to that of three others: Gauri Lankesh, M.M. Kalburgi, and Govind Pansare. The court acquitted three other suspects accused in the case in May 2024, which Dabholkar’s family strongly condemned. One of the three acquitted is believed to be the mastermind.
