Economist and columnist Sönmez was briefly arrested in April 2019 and charged with “insulting the president” for tweets he posted calling President Erdoğan “the chief of a thief gang” and “piece of dictator.” He was acquitted of this charge in June 2021. In February 2024, he was acquitted after he was tried for“insulting the president” for the fifth time.
