Mostafa Mehraeen is a sociologist and translator. In March 2025, a criminal case was opened against him due to the series of critical open letters he had written to Ayatollah Khamenei. He was arrested and transferred to Evin Prison in June after he wrote another letter critical of the Iran-Israel War that the region was embroiled in at the time. The prison was bombed later in the same month, leading to questions about Mehraeen’s whereabouts. It was later revealed that he had been transferred to Qom Prison. Mehraeen was released in July. In December 2025, he was sentenced to a total of 8 years in prison for "propaganda," "collusion against national security," and "insulting the leadership." He was summoned to serve his senence in February 2026.
