A Muslim journalist who specializes in online fact-checking, Zubair was informed by Twitter in June 2022 that the Indian government had requested they suspend his account. In the following weeks, he was arrested several times for his tweets, and was charged with “malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings.” On July 15, he was granted bail but cannot leave India without permission. In December 2024, Zubair was called to court on charges of “endangering sovereignty, unity, and integrity of India,” due to a Twitter post he shared of a Hindu priest making offensive comments about Islam.
