In 2010, Rasoulof was arrested alongside fellow filmmaker Jafar Panahi, and received a six-year prison sentence for “propaganda”; it was later reduced to one year and he was released on bail, but prevented from travel. In July 2022, Rasoulof was arrested for “inciting unrest.” On January 7, 2023, he was temporarily released due to health issues, and was later released on February 13, 2023.
