Documentary filmmaker Min Htin Ko Ko Gyi was first detained on April 2019 and sentenced to 1 year in prison with hard labor for criticizing the military in his films and social media posts. He was released on February 21, 2020. Ko Ko Gyi then became one of the first creative artists to be detained on the first night of the February 1, 2021 military-led coup on charges of incitement. On November 15, 2022, he was released from prison.
