Iranian writer and online commentator Mehdi Salimi is known for writing on gender and politics. He was detained for a month in July 2020 and then released on bail. After being threatened over the phone, Salimi was arrested on July 7, 2020 and released on bail on August 18, 2020. On July 13, 2021, Salimi was sentenced to 3 years and 8 months in prison as well as mandatory emotional control classes for propaganda and blasphemy. Given a partially suspended sentence, Salimi began serving a six-month prison sentence on June 18, 2022. He was released on October 1, 2022.
