Activist Tavakoli has been targeted by authorities since 2006. He was arrested at his home in September 2022 for his online commentary in support of the protests in Iran. He was released on bail in December 2022. In July 2023, he was sentenced to 6 years in prison for “threatening national security.” He was imprisoned in October. He was released on bail in July 2024 but again sentenced to two years in prison by an appeals court in December. In April 2025, it was announced he had been pardoned and would not be returning to prison.
