An advocate for an independent press, historian Monjib was detained on December 29, 2020 following a retaliatory investigation against him into alleged money laundering. A month later, he was sentenced to one year in prison for endangering national security and fraud. He was released on bail in March 2021 but denied the possibility to travel abroad to receive medical treatment in October. On April 3, 2025, Monjib announced that he began a hunger strike in protest of his travel ban.
