In 2016, Lü Gengsong was sentenced to 11 years in prison on charges of “inciting subversion of state power” for publishing critical articles overseas and meeting with other activists. His health has seriously deteriorated while incarcerated, but he has been denied medical parole. Lü’s family visits were suspended for three months after he wore a “help me” mask during a March 2023 visit from his wife.
