For writing articles calling for political reform, Liu was searched and arrested in June 2010 and sentenced to ten years in prison where he was reportedly forced to labor 13 hours daily. After completing a 14-day quarantine at home, Liu was released on June 27, 2020. Friends and fellow activists were reportedly blocked by police from visiting him. Surveillance was allegedly set up at his home, and police reportedly monitored him nonstop. Since his release on June 27, 2020, he has been surveilled and monitored by police.
