Reuters reporter Kyaw Soe Oo was a 2018 PEN/Barbey Freedom to Write Award honoree. He was arrested in December 2017 along with his colleague Wa Lone after they covered a massacre in Rakhine State. Both writers received seven-year prison sentences in 2018 for allegedly obtaining state secrets. Though their sentences were repeatedly upheld, they were ultimately released via an amnesty on May 6, 2019.
