Ismayilova has long been targeted for her investigative reporting on government corruption. She was detained in December 2014 and later convicted of retaliatory charges, including tax evasion. In May 2016, she was released on probation for five years. In 2020 the European Court of Human Rights ruled that the actions of the Azerbaijan government sought to silence Ismayilova’s writing and free expression.
