Kameel Ahmady, known for writing about women’s rights issues such as female genital mutilation and child marriage in Iran, was arrested on August 11, 2019 for unknown charges. He was arbitrarily detained for 100 days, then released on a 500 million toman bail. On December 13, 2020, Ahmady was sentenced to nine years and three months in prison on charges of “collaborating with a hostile government.” Soon after his conviction, while waiting for his appeal to be heard in court, Ahmady fled Iran into exile. He continues to write and research abroad.
