A writer, online commentator, and historian, Dehbashi was convicted in July 2022 for making a claim that Ahmad Khomeini died of drug overuse. He was sentenced to 6 months in prison but was never arrested. He was cleared of charges in February 2023 as part of a mass amnesty. In April 2024, he faced new criminal charges of “disturbing the public mind” for his tweets about Iran’s attack on Israel.
