On July 26, 2016, reporter and columnist Hanım Büşra Erdal was detained and ordered to jail on charges of “membership in a terrorist organization” in a sweep of journalists writing for popular Turkish newspaper Zaman. Zaman was forced to close after the attempted 2016 coup. On March 8, 2018, she was found guilty and sentenced to six years and three months in prison. She was denied adequate medical care in prison. Erdal was conditionally released from Istanbul’s Bakırköy Women’s Prison on April 1, 2021, although all conditions were removed in October 2021.
