On December 6, 2023, Turkish journalist Gözde Bedeloğlu’s trial began after nationalist MHP politician Sermet Akay filed a complaint against her for her April 9, 2023 column, “From Yesterday to Today: Those Who Protect the State.” A hearing was held on February 2, 2024, during which the prosecution requested a fine. Another hearing followed on May 23, 2024. On November 12, 2024, Bedeloğlu was sentenced to a 7,080 lira fine for “insulting public officials.”
