Iraee was first sentenced to six years in prison in 2014 on charges related to an unpublished short story criticizing the practice of stoning. Released in April 2019, she was charged for her advocacy from prison and re-arrested in November. She was released in May 2022 only to be re-arrested in September following her support of the Mahsa Amini protests. In April 2023, she was sentenced to 7 years in prison.
