Gao Yu, a prominent Chinese journalist, has been imprisoned three times for her dissident reporting. Most recently, in 2014, she was sentenced to seven years for allegedly revealing state secrets, specifically the Chinese Communist Party’s internal document “Document No. 9,” which condemns various Western values, including “news freedom.” In November 2015, she was released on medical parole due to her health issues and served the remainder of her sentence under house arrest.
