Poet and activist Fereshteh Soori was arrested with her husband Ali Jahanian in September 2024 for “propaganda” charges. Soori was released on bail in November. In March 2025, she was sentenced to a year in prison for “propaganda” along with her husband. Both Soori and Jahanian were acquitted of national security charges. In July 2025, Soori was sentenced to a total of 3 years in prison for new charges of “spreading lies” and “propaganda” while she was already serving the previous sentence. Soori’s sentence was reduced to a year and 5 months. In the fall, she was permitted a brief leave from prison in order to visit her cancer-stricken father.
