Veteran journalist Mavioğlu was sentenced in 2019 to nearly 5 years in prison for “propagandizing for a terrorist organization” after screening Bakur, a film he co-directed with Çayan Demirel, in a mostly Kurdish-populated province during the Turkish-Kurdish peace process. In December 2023, he was sentenced to 2 years and 1 month in prison. The sentence was upheld in April 2024. He also received a separate conviction in 2020 for participating in a solidarity campaign with the shuttered pro-Kurdish daily Özgür Gündem, resulting in a 1 year and 3 month sentence.
