Ender İmrek has faced persistent legal harassment over the course of his career. Known for his opinion writing in Evrensel newspaper, İmrek has been repeatedly targeted for his critical stance toward the Turkish government, particularly President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and the presidential administration. He went on trial in October 2022 for insulting the President, and was acquitted on January 10, 2023. He was among a group of journalists detained in mass raids in February 2025. He was released on house arrest in the same month.
