Ender İmrek has faced persistent legal harassment over the course of his career. Known for his opinion writing in Evrensel newspaper, İmrek has been repeatedly targeted for his critical stance toward the Turkish government, particularly President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and the presidential administration. He went on trial in October 2022 for insulting the President, and was acquitted in January 2023. He was among a group of journalists detained in mass raids in February 2025, and was released into house arrest in the same month. In May, the house arrest was lifted, but he was given a travel ban. He was indicted for "membership in a terrorist organization." The court ruled against lifting İmrek's travel ban in September. He is currently on trial for the same terror-related charges which stem from articles he wrote in the 2010s.
