On July 24, 2016, foreign military affairs correspondent and author Emre Soncan was arrested in a sweep of arrests of suspected followers of exiled preacher Fethullah Gülen, who was blamed for attempted coup earlier that month. Citing a book Soncan wrote about former Presideny Abdullah Gül, interviews he gave, and his social media activity, Soncan’s trial began in March 2017. On April 10, 2018, he was sentenced to seven-and-a-half years in jail on terrorism charges. Soncan was released from prison on September 2, 2021.
