Following a peaceful demonstration against President Alpha Condé’s third term in October, singer/songwriter Elie Kamano was arrested for “participation in a gathering likely to disturb public order.” In November, Kamano was released following a successful appeal. Beginning in February 2020, Kamano has entered political discourse, publicly opposing Alpha Condé’s government. Additionally, in July 2021, he was found guilty of insults and defamation against the former president of the Guinean Football Federation and ordered to pay a fine of GNF 50 million.
