Ekrem Dumanli, the former editor-in-chief of the popular Turkish newspaper Zaman, was first arrested in December 2014 in a crackdown on journalists associated with the Gülenist movement. Although he was released due to lack of evidence, his newspaper was shut down in July 2016. Following a sweep of arrests of people linked to Gülenist Terror Group (FETO), Dumanli fled to Greece in 2020. In July 2021, Turkey requested his extradition and froze his assets before completely confiscating them in September. As of March 2022, Dumanli has been living in exile in the U.S.
