Short story writer and reporter Harerimana was arrested with other members of the Iwacu staff in October 2019 while investigating clashes between security forces and armed groups. In January 2020, he was sentenced to two and a half years in prison for threatening state security; meanwhile, his four colleagues received a presidential pardon and were conditionally released in December 2020.
