The son of prominent human rights activists, Zarakolu was first arrested in 2002 for a speech he gave at his mother’s funeral, which led to charges of “inciting hatred.” In 2011, he was arrested again during a widespread crackdown on pro-Kurdish intellectuals and spent over two years in prison. Although released in 2014, he continued to face terrorism-related charges. As of 2025, there are no new charges or trials against him, suggesting a cessation of legal actions.
