On June 5, 2018, Ersanlı was convicted of “making propaganda for a terrorist group” and sentenced to 15 months in prison. The court did not defer her sentence, meaning she was required to serve the term. The charges stem from for her endorsement of a petition, organized by a group called Academics for Peace, criticizing military violence against the Kurds. The group has been persecuted as part of a crackdown on pro-Kurdish voices in Türkiye.
