On March 4, 2020, Barış Terkoğlu was arrested for a report published on OdaTV with photos of the funeral of a Turkish officer killed in Syria. In April, he was indicted for “disclosing classified information crucial to the security and interests of the state” and “exposing the contents of documents and information concerning intelligence operations.” Terkğlu was acquitted on September 9, 2020, but put on trial in March 2021 for “making targets of those assigned to combat terrorism,” and sentenced to two years in prison in May 2024. He remained outside of prison. He faced a new criminal complaint for defamation in November 2025. In December 2025, his trial in a seperate defamation case over an article he had written in February on the Kartalkaya hotel fire began. He was given a suspended sentence of a year and 15 days in prison for defamation in January 2026.
