Bahruz Samadov

In August 2024, Samadov, a columnist, peace activist, and PhD student at Charles University in Prague, was arrested while visiting his family in Baku. He was held incommunicado for two days before appearing in court, where he was remanded to four months of pretrial detention on treason charges. Samadov, who was a strong advocated for diplomacy and peace between Azerbaijan and Armenia, was baselessly accused of collaborating with Armenian intelligence services. In December, the Sabail District Court extended his detention. He attempted suicide during his trial. Samadov was sentenced to 15 years in prison in June 2025. He remained imprisoned following Azerbaijan's peace talks with Armenia in August. In October, he had reportedly been transferred to solitary confinement.
