Askarov tragically passed away on July 25, 2020, after contracting pneumonia while in state custody in Kyrgyzstan. He had been serving a life sentence for alleged involvement in ethnic violence, a charge widely regarded as politically motivated due to his active advocacy for the rights of the ethnic Uzbek minority in the country. In 2021, a documentary titled Last Chance for Justice was released, shedding light on the tireless struggle of Askarov’s wife, who continued to seek justice for her husband’s wrongful conviction and tragic death.
