A writer, former journalist, translator, and Kurdish-language teacher, Zal was released in 2004 after spending 12 years in prison. He was arrested again in June 2020 and accused of being a member of a terrorist organization. He was sentenced to 6 years and 3 months in prison in March 2022. The charges were based on his alleged involvement with DTK and Kurdish cultural institutions, including publishing banned materials and giving interviews to Kurdish-language media. He is currently being retried.
