Since 2017, Rahmani has been threatened with legal action for content in his books, including a gay relationship and a depiction of God. In November 2020, he was found guilty of “insulting the President of the Republic” and fined 50,000 dinar for online political writings. In 2022, he joined the Artist Protection Fund at Carnegie Mellon and completed a residency with City of Asylum in Pittsburgh, where he gave public talks on freedom of expression. He is now recognized as an exiled writer.
