Moneim writes political opinion articles that have included criticism of President El-Sisi’s policies. In December 2020, he was arrested and charged with “spreading false news” and “participating in terrorist activities,” citing his social media posts. He was pardoned and released in May 2022. Throughout his pre-trial detention, he suffered medical neglect including for an untreated eye infection.
