On February 2, 2019, Mashzoub, a prominent novelist, was murdered by an anonymous motorcycle gunman in Karbala. Prior to his death, Mashzoub was a vocal critic of Iraqi religious sectarianism and his killing is suspected to be related to his online posts critical of Iran’s Ayatollah Khomeini and its involvement in Iraqi affairs. No group has claimed responsibility for the assassination, and the Iraqi government has never identified the perpetrators.
