A pioneering activist and blogger, Abd El-Fattah was first arrested in 2014 and served five years in prison until March 2019. He was re-arrested six months later and detained at Tora prison. In December 2021, he was sentenced to five years in prison for “broadcasting false news.” He started a hunger strike in April 2022, which he escalated drastically during the COP27 before ending it due to precarious health. After serving his full sentence, Abd El-Fattah continues to be arbitrarily detained as Egyptian authorities refuse to count the two years he spent in pre-trial detention.
