Novelist and journalist Altan was detained after the 2016 coup attempt on spurious charges. After his life sentence was reduced to 10.5 years, he was released in 2019, but was promptly rearrested. A 2021 European Court ruling that his rights had been violated led to his release. In March 2022, he was sentenced to 3.5 years in prison. He was sentenced to over 6 years in prison for “aiding an organization” in February 2024. In a retrial in March 2026, he was sentenced to 4 years and 6 months.
