Ahmed Gamal Ziada lives in exile in Belgium following several arrests for his coverage of human rights abuse in Egypt. He was first detained in 2013 and acquitted in 2015. On February 13, 2019, Ziada was arrested again at Cairo Airport on charges of spreading false news before being released on bail in March. After fleeing to Belgium in late 2019, his father was detained in Egypt in August 2023, questioned about Ziada’s activities, and charged with various national security and disinformation related charges. His father was released on September 20, 2023.
