A poet, activist, and blogger, Douma was most notably arrested in 2013 due to his prominent role in the 2011 Egyptian revolution. He wrote his poetry collection Your Voice is Heard, published in 2012, and continued to write in prison despite severe restrictions. He was sentenced to 15 years in prison. Douma was later pardoned by President al-Sisi and released on August 19, 2023. However, he continuously faced smear campaigns, judicial harassment, and physical threats because of his writings and expression. In 2025, he was charged with "disseminating false news" on multiple occasions in relation to his online commentary. On April 6, 2026, Douma was ordered into 4-day detention by the Supreme State Security Prosecution in connection with an article he published about prison conditions.
