Septuagenarian Palestinian writer, scholar, and political commentator Ahmad Qatamesh has been repeatedly detained by Israeli authorities over several decades largely because of his political opinions and his association with groups the Israeli government considers unlawful. Amnesty International has described him as a prisoner of conscience and said that his detention without charge or trial has been arbitrary. Qatamesh has been arrested multiple times over the years, including in October 2021 following a lecture he gave at Birzeit University that was deemed “incitement.” His most recent arrest occurred in May 2025, when he was taken into administrative detention without charge; he was held for three months before being released in August 2025 after the detention order expired.
