Banned from publishing in Egypt after the 2011 Egyptian Revolution, Egyptian-Turkish poet and activist Abdul Rahman Al-Qaradawi was exiled to Turkey, where he continued to advocate for change. In 2017, an Egyptian court verdict sentenced him, in absentia, to five years in prison for spreading “false news.” In December 2024 he was arrested in Lebanon after posting a video from Syria celebrating the fall of Bashar al-Assad and expressing hope that states like Egypt and the UAE would not hinder the Syrian transition. Both states filed lawsuits requesting Al-Qaradawi’s extradition, and on January 8, 2025, he was sent to the UAE.
