Banned from publishing in Egypt after the 2011 Egyptian Revolution, Egyptian-Turkish poet and activist Al-Qaradawi relocated to Turkey. In 2017, an Egyptian court verdict sentenced him, in absentia, to 5 years in prison for spreading “false news.” In December 2024, he was arrested in Lebanon after posting a video celebrating the fall of Bashar al-Assad and expressing hope that states like Egypt and the UAE would not hinder the Syrian transition. Both states requested Al-Qaradawi’s extradition, and on January 8, 2025, he was sent to the UAE where he is believed to currently be in detention.!!
