David Heska Wanbli Weiden, an enrolled member of the Sicangu Lakota nation, is associate professor of Native American Studies and political science at Metropolitan State University of Denver. A first-generation college student, he received his MFA in creative writing from the Institute of American Indian Arts, his J.D. from the University of Denver Sturm College of Law, and his Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Austin. His academic scholarship involves Native American issues and law, and he provides legal assistance to several American Indian organizations in Denver. He’s an alumnus of VONA and the Tin House Summer Workshop, and is a 2018 MacDowell Colony Fellow. He’s published short fiction in various literary magazines and recently completed a novel titled Winter Counts, set on the Rosebud Indian Reservation.
