Michael has had a 45-year career in book publishing, encompassing positions as Editor, Publisher, and CEO of major publishing companies, and is a past President of the Association of American Publishers as well as a past PEN Gala Publisher Honoree. He’s had the honor of working closely with hundreds of writers, among them Martin Amis, Michael Connelly, Malcolm Gladwell, Mark Leyner, Stephenie Meyer, Walter Mosley, James Patterson, George Pelecanos, Keith Richards, J.K. Rowling, Stacy Schiff, David Sedaris, Donna Tartt, David Foster Wallace, Stephen Wright, Malala Yousafzai, and a posthumous memoir by Ernest Hemingway. He continues to edit select books, and his passion for the close partnership between writers and publishers has animated his career. Michael joined PEN America’s Board in 2014, and serves on the Executive Committee, Gala Committee, and the Nominating and Governance Committee, of which he is a past chair.
