Loree Burns

Loree’s first career was as a research scientist (she holds a Ph.D. in biochemistry), so it’s not surprising that her writing celebrates our natural world and the people who study it. While researching her award-winning science books for children, Loree has beachcombed on both coasts, cruised the Pacific Ocean in search of plastic, graduated from bee school, counted birds in Central Park, stung herself with a honey bee, lived on a butterfly farm, and scaled a mountain on horseback in order to visit the winter home of the monarch butterfly. Her books have received several honors, including starred reviews, a Boston Globe-Horn Book Honor Book award, ALA Notable Book designations, an International Reading Association Children’s Book Award and a Science Books & Film Prize. Her latest book, Citizen Scientists: Be a Part of Scientific Discovery from Your Own Backyard (Henry Holt, 2012), is an introduction to and celebration of real kids doing real science.
