Hawra Alnabi

Hawra Alnabi was born in the cradle of ancient civilization, in a land once called Mesopotamia, in a southern Iraqi village that has endured for thousands of years amid the marshlands, and where the first word was written. At age three, she fled Iraq with her family after the uprising against Saddam Hussein’s regime and the execution of her grandfather. They spent five years in a barricaded, isolated refugee camp in the scorching deserts of Saudi Arabia.

At the age of eight, Hawra and her family were granted refugee asylum to the United States. She is now writing her family’s story, her memories of the camp and their early years in America, to preserve their history for her children and generations to come.

Hawra is a mother of two who enjoys traveling the world, immersing herself in books, and exploring new hobbies.
