Frank Smyth is an internationally recognized expert on press freedom and journalist security. Founder and executive director of Global Journalist Security, he is also Senior Adviser for Journalist Security at the New York-based Committee to Protect Journalists and the main author of CPJ’s Journalist Security Guide. He has covered armed conflicts, organized crime, and human rights abuses in many countries, including in Iraq, where he was imprisoned for 18 days in 1991. He has reported for CBS News and written for outlets including The Nation, The Village Voice, The New Republic, The Washington Post, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and Foreign Affairs. He has been awarded for both his investigative journalism and his service to the journalism community.
