(NEW YORK)–PEN America called on Georgia officials to drop charges, and Immigration and Customs Enforcement to end any deportation efforts, against journalist Mario Guevara.

“The arrest of Guevara for simply doing his job while reporting the news is an alarming press freedom violation that sends a chilling message to journalists, especially immigrant journalists and those covering vulnerable communities. Targeting reporters for documenting protests or immigration enforcement undermines their ability to hold the government accountable and threatens the public’s right to know,” said Tim Richardson, journalism and disinformation program manager at PEN America. “Guevara has work authorization in the U.S., a long track record of covering immigration, and was clearly identified as a member of the press at the time of his arrest. Press freedom in this country requires that journalists be able to report on public events without fear of arrest or retaliation. Prosecutors must drop all charges against Guevara, and ICE must immediately end any efforts to deport him.”

Guevara, who fled El Salvador two decades ago and has authorization to work in the United States, was broadcasting live on social media for the Spanish-language outlet MGNews in the Atlanta area when officers arrested him. He was jailed on charges of obstructing police, unlawful assembly and improperly entering a roadway. His attorney told The Associated Press he was kept in jail after ICE  placed a hold on him, which could lead to deportation proceedings.
