(NEW YORK)- PEN America responded today to comments from the Palestinian Journalists Syndicate, denouncing threats and intimidation by Hamas against some Palestinian journalists in Gaza, including the storming of the home of journalist Ihad Fasfous by armed gunmen.
PEN America stated: “With access to Gaza for outside reporters restricted by border officials at both the Israel and Egypt access points, and as the death toll of Palestinian journalists continues to mount as a result of the war, it is critical that journalists in Gaza not face the added threat of retribution for their reporting from Hamas. The Israeli government and Hamas must both comply with their obligations to protect journalists and safeguard their ability to report on the war. Journalists play a vital role in ensuring transparency and accountability for those in power, especially in times of conflict.”
The Palestinian Journalists Syndicate advocates for the safety of Palestinian reporters in Israel, Gaza, and the West Bank.
According to the Committee to Protect Journalists, at least 116 journalists and media workers have been killed in the Israel-Hamas war since October 7.
