(NEW YORK)— In response to President Trump’s plan to eliminate the federal Institute of Museum and Library Services, PEN America issued the following comments:
“The gutting of the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) will weaken our nation’s library system and undermine the essential services it provides,” said Jonathan Friedman, Sy Syms managing director of US free expression programs at PEN America. ”The funding provided through IMLS supports improvements and innovation, ensures the continued operations of small and rural libraries, and helps libraries meet the specific needs of their communities. From access to Braille books for the blind to high speed internet access to those in need, our libraries provide core services for our communities. By making it harder to access libraries, this move inhibits the ability of all people to exercise their freedom to read and learn. As an organization dedicated to books and literature, we call on Congress to ensure the IMLS remains strong, independent, and robustly funded.”
Established in 1996, IMLS is the primary federal agency providing crucial financial support to libraries and museums nationwide.
